Moonlight Page 2 - The Blood Drives, etc

In December of 2007, when it became apparent that our beloved show Moonlight might be in danger of cancelation, two other fans of the show and myself brainstormed a grass-roots, fan based campaign to save the show. We thought that the idea of teaming up with the Red Cross and sponsoring a blood drive might just be tongue-in-cheek enough to generate some publicity for the show in an effort to attract new viewers, and, at the same time, impress the network “powers that be” with our loyalty and determination. We contacted Youchoose.com – a website which promotes and sponsors many different causes and ‘save-our-show’ campaigns to see if they would sponsor the event with us.

As it turned out, the folks at Youchoose thought our idea was worthy of their sponsorship and the Official Moonlight Blood Drive was born. Around that time, it was brought to our attention that the show’s co-creator Trevor Munson’s mother was in need of a bone marrow transplant. We decided to expand the original idea to include possible bone marrow testing and donation, in an effort to find a match for Trevor’s mom.

Together with hundreds of fans from the four largest Moonlight message boards, and with the approval and assistance of CBS and Warner Bros reps, as well as the support and participation of the cast and crew of the show– we pulled off a nationwide blood drive that took place the third week in April, 2008.

Blood drives were held in 33 states across the US, and, at the end of the week-long event, 3695 pints of blood were donated!

Trevor Munson became personally involved in the blood drives, and ultimately held his own blood drive in San Diego during Comic Con weekend!

Despite the best efforts of the fans, Trevor, and the appointment of the show’s star, Alex O’Loughlin, as a Red Cross Spokesperson, Moonlight was ultimately cancelled; however, the Moonlight Blood Drive was lauded by the press as the best fan-based charitable campaign ‘ever’!

It should be said that we were not only fans of the show, but we became huge admirers of Trevor Munson, who put a human face on the campaign because of his mother’s need of a bone marrow transplant. He took time out of his life to help the fans with the blood drives then, and he continues to keep in touch with the fans to this day!

Because of his generosity and basic human decency, we are, indeed, fans not only of Moonlight; but of Trevor himself….

The quote from MSNBC about the blood drives & the fans efforts to save lives while trying to save the show at the same time

“Moonlight”
Why it should have been renewed:  It might have been the lowest-rated of CBS’s Friday night dramas, but "Moonlight" still consistently won its time slot against ABC and NBC offerings. That’s impressive, considering all of the tinkering that went on at this series about a blood-sucking private investigator.  After multiple show-runner changes and a few shaky scripts, “Moonlight” seemed to just be settling into a charming routine in its post-strike episodes.

Series highlight: As brooding vampire Mick St. John, Alex O’Loughlin injected equal parts hot and cool into his leading-man role. A flash of his smile could make even an undead pulse quicken.

Silver lining: Fans should congratulate themselves on the most charitable “save our show” campaign ever. A well-orchestrated blood drive organized through YouChoose.net might not have been able to save the series, but it did help save lives. Mick would be proud.
